Two Simple Secrets for WAKING UP!
We (I don't think it's just me) have a tendency to over-complicate, over-think, over-verbalize, and over-analyze life. When I catch myself in that kind of thinking, I try to remember that I really do prefer simple over complicated because, well, it's easier!
So this week I'd like to offer you a simple, bottom-line, fundamentally basic recipe for success, happiness, love, and all the other desirable qualities of life we humans spend most of our time pursuing. I call them the Two Secrets for WAKING UP!
| SECRET #1: Figure out what's not working in your life and stop doing it.
Figure out what does work and start doing that instead! |
Pretty simple, huh?
The response I generally hear is: “Yeah, sounds great, but how do I know what's working or not working?”
Pay attention to your body. As a tool for self awareness, it's brilliant!
Here's a sample exercise: do a quick scan of all the close relationships in your life, such as your partner, friends, family, and the people at work. As your thoughts linger a few moments on each relationship, notice what's going on in your body.
If you feel yourself smiling, breathing deeply, feeling warm, peaceful, expansive or relaxed, then there's a whole lot of love going on in the relationship.
If your gut tightens, your face scrunches up, you wince, hold your breath, or feel yourself withdrawing, then something in the relationship isn't working. And more likely than not, there's some - or a lot of - fear hanging out there.
In any given moment, you can use your body as litmus test to be more aware of how your thoughts about a relationship are either feeding and nurturing you or draining the Life Force right out of you.
Granted, these two Secrets are simple in principle . Learning how to stop doing what's not working and instead start doing what works take a little time to figure out. It takes some “PCP”: being Persistent, Consistent, and Patient.
Often it's a matter of trial and error. You try something, look at how well it works, tweak it, try something a little different, learn from it, and tweak it a little more. Trust your body to tell you when you're on track or not.
After all, isn't that exactly how the process of personal evolution works?
Here's your WAKE UP CALL this week:
Begin paying closer attention to your body. That's all. Just notice when your body is feeling tight and confined, and when it's feeling relaxed and expansive. I believe that the mere act of observation will kick the WAKE UP Wheels of Change into motion.
This simple action will also stop the “emotional autopilot” long enough to give you a chance to explore what thoughts are creating the fear, and to make different a choice. And if you observe that you're feelin' the Love, CELEBRATE and PASS IT ALONG!
